LEARN MOREFrom 1984 to 1990, Dave proudly served in the United States Navy. During his time in service, he was stationed aboard the USS Ingersoll (DD-990) and the USS Leftwich (DD-984), where he worked as a Fire Control Technician. He was assigned to the Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapon System), a role he carried out with dedication and skill.
Dave loved sharing stories from his Navy days with anyone who would listen. On Veteran’s Day, when people would thank him for his service, he would humbly respond, “I am thankful for what the Navy did for me.” He remained deeply proud and grateful for his experience throughout his life.
Dave began his career in the wireless industry in 1991. In his first months, he was immersed in the installation phase of projects, where he quickly learned the standards for batteries and power systems, telco rack equipment, GE racks and radio equipment, as well as combiner and filter racks, CSCs (cell site control cabinets), and alarm systems.
As he gained knowledge and experience, Dave was soon added to a tower crew. There, he learned the challenges of assembling towers on the ground, erecting them, working with cranes, and installing lines and antennas. Excelling in wireless construction within his first year, Dave was promoted to what is known today as a “top hand,” and shortly thereafter, he advanced again to a crew lead position.
During these early years in the industry, Dave built lasting friendships with individuals who would become pioneers in the telecommunications world. In 2000, Dave founded Steelhead. Big ideas were born around the table at a local Denny’s alongside his core team. Remarkably, some of those same individuals, Chad Sivertsen and Shane Martin, are still part of the journey today, 25 years later. Steelhead remains a leader in the industry, a testament to Dave’s vision and leadership.
Dave’s legacy lives on through his three daughters, his six grandsons, and his Steelhead family.
